LUMBER INSPECTOR

Basic Functions

A Lumber Inspector, under the direction of the Director, Quality Standards, and management staff, is responsible for all grade inspections, Quality Management Systems (QMS) audits and related activities as assigned. The primary role is to provide assistance to mills with grader and sawmill training needs. This position also provides grading interpretations and application to products while on inspection and reinspection assignments. Duties include: supervising of WWPA grade rules and stamps at member mills; recommending mill graders for certification; issuing prompt and complete reports to headquarters on all work activities; assisting Field Manager during lumber and log recovery surveys and group grade meetings; participating with field service personnel in marketplace educational programs on grades; when requested, issuing certificates on shipments; and special assignments requested by management.

Specific Responsibilities and Authority

Within the limits of authorized Association policies, procedures, programs and budgets, a Lumber Inspector is responsible for and has the authority to accomplish the following:

  1. Conducts monthly mill inspections assigned by headquarters. This includes checks on grades, stamping, moisture content, sizes and adherence to Association policies and procedures.
  2. Conducts Quality Management Systems (QMS) audits assigned by headquarters. This includes mill’s adherence to QMS policies and procedures.

  4. When qualified, conducts marketplace reinspections at the request of management.

Specific Responsibilities and Authority

Within the limits of authorized Association policies, procedures, programs and budgets, a Lumber Inspector is responsible for and has the authority to accomplish the following:

  1. Conducts monthly mill inspections assigned by headquarters. This includes checks on grades, stamping, moisture content, sizes and adherence to Association policies and procedures.
  2. Conducts Quality Management Systems (QMS) audits assigned by headquarters. This includes mill’s adherence to QMS policies and procedures.
  3. Advises member mills on all grading matters, including grade rule interpretations and changes.
  4. When qualified, conducts marketplace reinspections at the request of management.
  5. Monitors the proper use and application of WWPA grade stamps by member mills.
  6. Coaches, reviews and recommends mill graders to become WWPA certified.
  7. Provides Field Manager and Portland Headquarters with complete and legible reports on all activities.
  8. Participates, as directed by management, in educational grade activities in cooperation with technical and product support services.
  9. When requested by management, and when approved for specific products and grades, issues WWPA certificates on shipments.
  10. Undertakes other inspection duties and quality control tasks and assignments as directed by the Director of Quality Standards.

Qualifications

Must have several years of experience as a certified lumber grader and be thoroughly familiar with all phases of lumber manufacture and sawmill practices. Related college-level coursework is desirable. Strong self-starting, organizational and communication skills are a must.

LUMBER INSPECTOR
